Variations on a Theme, alternately hosted by David Niergarth and Jim Schwall, focuses on concert music of the last century or so and airs on WORT-FM every Thursday morning.
When Jim Schwall programs and announces the show, he concentrates on the parts of the European and classical tradition usually ignored by other classical shows -- the landmarks of the twentieth century and works recently premiered by living composers with occasional forays into the predecessors of Bach and Vivaldi.
Programmer and announcer David Niergarth often plays new recordings featuring less-well-known composers. You will also hear 20th century chamber and wind music with occasional forays into music from international classical traditions. "After doing this program for several years, I'm continually amazed at how, month after month, I still run into interesting recordings featuring music by young and old composers who I've never encountered before!"
