All about WORT's music

All of WORT's music programs are locally produced by local DJs, and all of these DJs are volunteers from the community.

The weekday music schedule includes:

  • Classical - 5-8am
  • Folk & International - 9-12pm
  • Jazz - 2-5pm (except Fridays, Rock 2-4:30pm)
  • Rock, techno, metal, etc. - 8pm-5am
  • Blues - Fridays 6-8pm, Sat 8-10pm

The weekend music lineup includes all sorts of genres. Saturdays are divvied up into two-hour shows, beginning with Mexican music at 6am. At 8:00, WORT airs classic R&B, then vintage jazz and swing, then reggae, then music from all around Africa, then salsa and latin jazz, then rock 'n' roll oldies, then blues, then hip-hop all night.

Sunday's music has yet more variety, including medieval and renaissance music in the morning, womyn's music in the early afternoon, followed by showtunes. World music in late afternoon, kids music at 6:30, then gospel, electronic, experimental, and avant garde music through the night.

Frequently Asked Questions about Music at WORT

Q: Music Submissions: How do I get my music played on WORT?

A: We accept submissions of most styles of music, focusing on noncommercial, out-of-the-mainstream, independent releases (visit our web site for more information.) In most cases it will take a few weeks for us to receive, review, and process the music. We prefer CDs to electronic submissions because although we do maintain a music library of computer files, sending music digitally is not the best way to get it into the hands of our programmers and onto the airwaves. Please send us your releases (full-length CD or vinyl preferred) including a one-sheet description (if applicable, you may also include biographical and tour information) care of the WORT Music Director. Our address and other information can be found above as well as at the bottom of this page.

Tracking of your music can be done by email, or you can call on Wednesdays between 1-4 pm central time with any questions such as: Did we receive it, has it been reviewed, has it been added to our library, what kind of airplay is it getting?--e.g. light, medium, heavy or charting. Thanks and we look forward to hearing your music!

Q: I was wondering if anyone taped the WORT sponsored concert I saw? It was a tremendous show and I would love to have it captured to relive.

A: Unfortunately, we usually do not have the authorization nor the technical capability to tape such shows. In any case, it would be illegal for us to broadcast or distribute it without prior permission. For WORT Welcomes, our "sponsorship" is of a purely promotional nature, and taping, broadcast or distribution of any shows have to be cleared through the artist's record label. I'm glad you enjoyed the show and I'm sorry we couldn't help you further.

Q: What was that song I heard on WORT? Who was the artist, what is the album title, where can I get it?

A: To get information about music you heard on WORT, your best bet is to call during the time the program is on and ask the host yourself. If you can't call till the show is over, try reaching them the next week. If that's really not possible, we may be able to help you, but please have as much information as possible at hand when you make your request, such as: what day and time the music was played; what type or genre of music it was; who was hosting the show and any other information you remember about the selection. We don't have staff to specifically deal with this, so please be patient and we'll get back to you just as soon as we can.

Q: Can I get the entire playlist for a program that I heard? I would really love to see playlists online for music shows.

A: You can usually get a copy of a program's playlist (if the DJ provided one) by writing or calling ahead with the specifics (date, day and time, name of program and host if possible). We'll photocopy it and leave it for you at the reception desk sometime within a week or so, or send a self-addressed stamped envelope with your request and we'll mail it out.

We're working on a system that would allow and encourage our DJs to more easily post their playlists online. But we also don't want to give DJs any more work than they already have to do while they are on the air. Doing a self-produced radio program can be quite complicated and the quality of our shows would surely suffer. We don't have the volunteer or paid staff to type in all of the playlists for us at this time. A few people do put their playlists online; ask your favorite host if they can add you to their e-mail list.
